A financial crisis and resolute refusal to compromise on independence has forced the independent daily electronic newspaper Hurriyat to cease publication from Thursday.

The daily Hurriyat, which was launched on October 31, 2010, by journalist, writer, and editor El Haj Warrag, is one of the most prominent independent Sudanese democratic newspapers that has rightly expressed, since its release, the hopes and aspirations of the Sudanese in freedom, democracy, and justice; a platform for defending the rights of the Sudanese, and combating human rights violations, corruption and obscurantism.

Hurriyat said in a statement that “while some proposals were put forward for the continuation of the newspaper, the majority of the Hurriyat family felt that these proposals may not guarantee the independence of the newspaper and its democratic line of contention. The decision was therefore made to cease publication instead of risking what it cares about”.
