EU, Norway call for Maryam El Mahdi’s release
The Delegation of the European Union in Sudan, the resident EU Member States Embassies, and the Embassy of Norway in Khartoum have expressed their concern about the imprisonment of Dr Maryam El Sadig El Mahdi, Vice-President of the National Umma Party. Dr El Sadig was detained upon her arrival at Khartoum International Airport on 12 August, and reportedly transferred to the Women’s Prison in Omdurman. In a press release issued today, the EU Embassies and the Embassy of Norway called for the release of Dr El Sadig. “Detention of political leaders and civil society activists goes against the spirit of an open and inclusive national discourse,” the EU Delegation in Sudan said.
