Eastern Sudanese protest relocation of Kassala market

The shopkeepers at the Kassala food market strongly reject the state government’s decision to move the market from the centre of the town.
“Hundreds of families will lose their income in case the shops and stalls are moved to a place outside Kassala,” a vegetable and fruit trader told Radio Dabanga.
He said that the market vendors have raised a memorandum of protest to the state’s Parliament, in which they point out that their livelihoods depend on the market. They have also called on the federal authorities to intervene and “avoid any harm to the people involved”.
The market vendor added that the Commissioner of Kassala locality, Abdelrahman Hassan, resigned earlier this week, after a displute with the Governor of Kassala state, Adam Jammaa, concerning the revenues from the wholesale market west of Kassala and the rent prices of the stalls.
