Sudan’s General Organisation for Geological Research announced that its main seismic monitoring station in Khartoum saw light tremors in Merowe starting January 1. These have continued intermittently to varying magnitudes of between 2 and 4 on the Richter magnitude scale. A 5.4 was measured last Thursday.

The director-general of the Geological Research Organisation, Mohamad Abufatma Abdallah, said that the people in the region have felt the earthquake. Tremors happen from time to time near the Nile, as well as in the area north of Mohamed Gol, where there are some geological intersections.

Last March, the seismic monitoring station measured a deep earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 south of El Obeid in North Kordofan. This was the first earthquake in Sudan since 2010.
