Displaced South Darfur parents plead school fee exemption

The parents of higher secondary school students of the seven camps for the displaced at Nyala, capital of South Darfur, have complained of the expulsion of displaced students in the city due to non-payment of tuition fees. One of the parents told Radio Dabanga that the secondary schools in Nyala this year have disavowed the agreement that stipulated exempting the displaced secondary school students from tuition fees. “The directors of these schools justified the imposition of a fee of SDG300 ($68) on the displaced students because Unicef, which used to support the schools directly, began transferring that support directly to the Ministry of Education,” he said. The parents of the displaced students have appealed to the school directors to exempt their children – several hundred – from those tuition fees “in recognition of their material and humanitarian conditions”.
