Dismissals in ex-rebel governance body for Darfur

Ten officials have been dismissed in the Transitional Darfur Authority, a largely defunct governance body set up by the Darfur Peace Agreement of 2006. The shake-up continues earlier power struggles that resulted in Minni Minawi’s dismissal from the chairmanship and apparent return to war this month.

The shake-up continues earlier power struggles that resulted in Minni Minawi’s dismissal from the chairmanship and apparent return to war this month.The Governor of West Darfur and new President of the Transitional Authority, Al Shartai Jaafar Abdel-Hakam, dismissed 10 advisors to the president of the authority. They belonged to the SLM faction led by Minawi. The governor explained that he does not need this “fleet” of advisors, and he accused the movement of deducting 25% from the salaries of all employees of the Authority three years ago.
