Darfuri students’ results withheld as supplemental exams loom

Leaders of the Darfuri Students Association have appealed to the administration of Omdurman Islamic University to release the results of 1,200 students ahead of the commencement of substitute and supplemental exams next week.

Leaders of the Darfuri Students Association have appealed to the administration of Omdurman Islamic University to release the results of 1,200 students ahead of the commencement of substitute and supplemental exams next week.

The University is withholding the results on the pretext of non-payment of fees, however in accordance with the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, Darfuri students are supposed to be exempt from fees.

The head of the Darfuri Students Association at Omdurman Islamic University, Abdelhadi Abdellatif, told Radio Dabanga that on Tuesday, the university administration refused to announce the results of 1200 Darfuri students from the faculties of law, economics and political science. The faculties of science and technology have indeed announced the results of the students.

He explained that they filed two requests to the university administration to announce the results so that the students can sit for substitute and supplements exams, but the university administration refused their demands. He pointed to the nearness of the substitute and supplements exams that will be held next week.

Abdellatif said that all the students of the states of Darfur are exempt from tuition fees under the DDPD, “however, Omdurman Islamic University administration are reluctant to implement that decision”.

He also noted the university administration's refusal to grant clearance for about 3,600 Darfuri graduate students from the university, and asked them to pay the tuition for all their years of study.

He called on the concerned authorities to intervene to resolve the problem.
