Darfur Regional Authority’s term extended

A political party reveals that the DRA will be restructured and receive an extension of its term, which ends next month.

A political party has revealed that the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) will be restructured and receive an extension of its term, which expires on 14 July.

The National Liberation and Justice Party, led by Dr El Tijani Sese, has announced the formation of a committee to consider restructuring options.

By next month, the DRA will have completed the four year-term stipulated in the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), signed between the Sudanese government and the former rebel Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) and a splinter group of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in Darfur in 2011.

Proposals have already been presented, according to Khalid Adam Saleh, secretary-general of the National Liberation and Justice Party, to the presidency. “A committee has been formed to look into three options for restructuring the DRA,” he explained, adding that some ammendments will be maintained in their current forms.
