Darfur rebels to meet with Chadian President

Three leaders of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF, an alliance of the main Sudanese rebel movements) will meet with the Chadian President, Idris Deby, in the Ethiopian capital early October. “The SRF received an invitation from the Chadian president for the meeting”, Dr Jibril Ibrahim, SRF co-vice president and leader of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), told Radio Dabanga on Tuesday.   “We accepted the invitation. Abdel Wahid El Nur, leader of the mainstream Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), Minni Minawi, head of the SLM breakaway faction, and I will meet with President Deby in Addis Ababa in the second week of October, to discuss the role of Chad in the realisation of peace in Sudan.” Abdel Wahid El Nur explained to Radio Dabanga that President Deby proposed to discuss the outcomes of the Um Jaras fora, convened in Chad in October 2013, and March this year. The fora, organised by Chad, in cooperation with the Sudanese government, were attended by Chadian and Sudanese tribal leaders, who agreed that even before peace is to be realised between the government and the rebel movements, security and the rule of law should be restored in Darfur.   El Nur pointed to the “more than 300,000 Darfuris refugees in Chad, most of them have not been registered”.  “To enable them to return, as well as the displaced on the Darfur camps, first, and for all security has to be restored by disarming the militias. In addition, the affected Darfuris have to be compensated.” File photo: Chadian President, Idris Deby Related: Displaced condemn Um Jaras Forum as ‘Darfur burns’ (2 April 2014) Um Jaras recommendations: ‘Disarm all but regular forces in Darfur’ (31 March 2014) ‘Um Jaras Forum to offer effective solutions for Darfur’: Chad President (27 March 2014)Sudanese Justice Minister defends Um Jaras Forum (27 November 2013)
