The governor of South Darfur, Abdel Hamid Musa Kasha, told Radio Dabanga today that two German aid workers have been freed from captivity. They had been kidnapped from their offices in the capital of South Darfur State, Nyala, on 22 June. The German foreign ministry confirmed the report separately to other news agencies. The men were working for the agency Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), which in German means the “Agency for Technical Relief.” It is primarily a volunteer organization controlled by the German federal government. In light of past kidnappings and releases of aid workers that have occurred in Darfur since March 2009, when President Omar Al Bashir was indicted for war crimes, it is likely that the men’s release was negotiated.
