Darfur displaced lose more than 70 houses to rains, floods

Heavy rains on Wednesday resulted in the destruction of a number of houses in the camps for the displaced at Nertiti in Central Darfur and Aramta in West Darfur. Speaking to Radio Dabanga from northern Nertiti, one of the sheikhs of the camps reported that the heavy rains of Wednesday evening led to the collapse of 50 houses, and flooded the camp. He expressed concern about the spread of diseases due to flies and mosquitoes. A sheikh of Aramta camp in West Darfur told Radio Dabanga that the rains destroyed more than 20 houses in the site. He criticised “the authorities’ and humanitarian organisations’ non-intervention to assist the displaced persons”. The sheikh underscored that the affected are “living in tragic situations” due to the acute shortage of plastic sheets and tents”.As reported by Radio Dabanga over the past week, record rainfall levels followed by flash floods have cost dozens of lives and left many injured throughout Sudan.
