‘Darfur Authority, Students Fund responsible for student discrimination’: activists

The Sudanese Committee of Solidarity with the Victims of the September Demonstrations and Darfur Students Association hold the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) responsible for the violent eviction of 70 Darfuri women students from El Zahra boarding house in Khartoum on 5 October. The No to Women Oppression Initiative (NWOI) has demanded the dismissal of the director of the National Endowment Fund for Students. The chairman of the Committee, Siddig Yousef, told reporters in Khartoum on Sunday that the Abuja and Doha peace agreements, stipulate that Darfuri students, being displaced, are exempted from registration and tuition fees. “Therefore”, he said, “the DRA is responsible for them, and should intervene in case they are expelled from Sudanese universities or dormitories for being unable to pay the fees.” He also criticised the recent increase of the monthly boarding fees from SDG25 ($4.35) to SDG200 ($35). The head of the Darfur Students Association, Kamal El Zein, also strongly condemned the DRA for its silence, and accused it of “being a tool for the implementation of the agenda of the ruling party”. He furthermore reported to Radio Dabanga that the National Endowment Fund for Students currently refuses to register any new Darfuri student. Meanwhile, the No to Women Oppression Initiative (NWOI) has demanded the dismissal of the director of the Endowment Fund, who had ordered the eviction of the Darfuri women students from El Zahra dormitory. Amal Habani, chairwoman of the No to Women Oppression Initiative (NWOI), told Radio Dabanga that the head of the students fund had behaved in “an entirely irresponsible way”, by ordering the eviction of the students during the Eid El Adha. “He should be dismissed immediately.” File photo: Lecture room at El Geneina University, West Darfur (Albert González Farran/Unamid) Related:‘Release political detainees in Sudan immediately’: activists (27 October 2014)‘Darfur Regional Authority closed door in our face’: students (13 October 2014)Women’s initiative condemns ‘racist attack’ on Darfuri students (9 October 2014)West Kordofan University dismisses Darfuri students (12 August 2014)No tuition fee exemption for Darfuri students at Sennar University (24 November 2013)
