Darfur activists warn of explosive ordnance in East Jebel Marra

Activists in East Jebel Marra have recorded the death of 41 people killed by Sudanese Air Force bombardments since the beginning of the year. 11 others died when unexploded grenades or other bombs detonated. “During the past six months, we also counted 26 rape cases”, an activist from East Jebel Marra reported to Radio Dabanga. Seven pregnant women died in an ambulance on their way to El Fasher, as no medical care exists in the region.” In addition to the lack of health centres and medicines, the activist pointed to the restrictions imposed by the authorities on aid organisations, “including even Unamid”, in accessing affected areas. The activists called on “Unamid, organisations, and stakeholders to clean up the remnants of war scattered in the region, especially as the rainy season has started, and farmers are tending their lands again. This may lead to new fatalities among the farmers.” File photo: Victim of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) in El Fasher, North Darfur (Albert González Farran/Unamid) Related:Fears as tainted food kills two children in Darfur’s East Jebel Marra (18 May 2014) Sudan aircraft bombs health centre in Darfur’s Jebel Marra (16 May 2014) Five children die, many wounded in East Jebel Marra ‘offensive’ (15 April 2014)Bomb kills two minors; air raids on Darfur’s Jebel Marra (29 January 2014) Unexploded ordnance kills three children in Darfur’s East Jebel Marra (13 April 2014)
