Chadian refugee raped, kidnaps in Central Darfur

Militiamen raped a nursing mother of Um Shalaya camp for Chadian refugees in Azum locality, Central Darfur on Tuesday. “This morning three government-backed militiamen assaulted the woman who was collecting firewood in Wadi Arora, 2.5km east of the camp. They beat the woman who was carrying her baby with her, and tied her with ropes. They threw the baby into the valley, after which they raped her alternately”, Wardi Bahreldin, representative of the Um Shalaya camp reported to Radio Dabanga.    “The baby’s cries saved its mother,” he explained, “because people on donkey carts passing by at a distance heard it and rushed towards the crime scene”. Bahreldin added that the incident was reported to the police. He also reported that on Monday four militiamen attempted to abduct Chadian refugee Abdallah Ibrahim Magdum. “The neighbours intervened in time, and chased the attackers away with batons.” The Chadian refugees complain about ongoing assaults and abductions by government-backed militiamen as a means to obtain the money. “Sheikh Abdel Karim Ishag was abducted two weeks ago. The kidnappers demand a ransom of SDG70,000 ($12,200) for his release.” File photo by Albert González Farran/Unamid Related: Ten abducted in South Darfur (1 June 2014) Three men abducted, militiamen have ‘new weapons’ in North Darfur (20 May 2014) Abducted transport head released in South Darfur (15 May 2014)
