The Central Darfur state employees and workers embarked on a brief strike on Tuesday in protest against the non-payment of their November salaries.

They gave the authorities 48 hours to pay them their salaries. Otherwise, they will start an open-ended strike on Thursday, the head of the Central Darfur Workers’ Union, Tajir Zakaria Idris, told Radio Dabanga.

He said that the staff of all the state institutions, including health, education, and water facilities, joined the strike. “They are not convinced of the justifications provided by the authorities who related the delay of the payments to the opening a bank account in order to fight corruption.

“This should not mean that they would not be paid. They have families depending on their income, and in addition, they have not been informed of this procedure in advance.”

Early November, the medical doctors working in the Central Darfur hospitals of Zalingei, Garsila, and Nierteti decided to strike because of the non-payment of their bonuses during the past four months.
