Central Darfur raises levies to pay for reception

Merchants and camp sheikhs in Mukjar locality in Central Darfur have been forced to contribute to the costs of a reception for the state governor’s visit on Tuesday.
“The authorities ordered each camp sheikh to pay levies of SDG500 ($81) and each merchant SDG50 ($8) for the reception to be held on the occasion of the visit of Governor Jaafar Abdelhakim to the area,” a Mukjar camp elder informed Radio Dabanga.
The camp sheikh strongly condemned the move, “especially as Eid El Adha [Feast of the Sacrifice] is approaching, and we all need the money for the feast.
“Such an expensive festivity should have been covered by the Central Darfur state treasury. We would have protested less if the proceeds were for education, health, and clean drinking water services,” he added.
