Central Darfur camp a mud pool after rains

Downpours destroyed 20 homes and 170 tents at Hassahissa camp for the displaced in Zalingei locality, Central Darfur, this week.
Camp head Haroun Adam Abdelshafe told Radio Dabanga that the 62,000 camp residents are living in dire humanitarian conditions, after heavy rainfall on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday turned the camp into a mud pool.
“At least 20 shelters and 170 tents collapsed and about 340 toilets flooded,” he reported.
He said that the situation will “certainly lead to the spread of diarrhoea, and an increase in malaria cases”, and called on the local authorities and aid organisations to provide assistance “as soon as possible”.
