A ‘cautious calm’ has reportedly returned to the Abyei area, territory disputed by South Sudan and Sudan, but the heath and economic situations are still very poor.

On Tuesday the MP for the Abyei administrative area, Nyan Koj, told Radio Dabanga that Abyei is suffering from “a terrible economic deterioration”.

She said that the prices of basic necessities are soaring amid lack of transportation because of the current situation in South Sudan and Abyei in particular.

She explained that there are citizens of Unity State have been displaced to the area, which has led to overcrowding around the service centres.

She described the security situation in Abyei as “calm but could explode at any time”.

Koj complained that “there is lack of seriousness in resolving the problem of Abyei between the governments of Sudan and South Sudan”.

Regarding the health situation in Abyei, the Department of Health confirmed the deterioration of the health conditions.

Abyei Health Director, Dr Iom Karchik told Radio Dabanga that there is a severe shortage of medicines and medical staff with a large increase in the population of the region.
