Camp Kabkabyia calls for investigation after shootings

Residents of Camp Kabkabiya demand an independent international investigation of shootings during a protest in their camp at the end of last month. According to eyewitnesses, the Sudanese police and UNAMID killed seven camp residents and injured another 19 on March 27 and 28. The residents of Kabkabiya and relatives of the victims ask for justice and say the perpetrators should be brought to trial. They said the people responsible for killing and injuring the protestors cannot escape their punishment. In addition, they asked for compensation for all those affected physically or suffering from trauma’s by the incident. They said there has been no investigation committee from the UNAMID or the Sudanese government since the incident occurred. The residents were protesting in March because of a commissioners plans to close camp Kabkabiya and relocate the displaced people to other camps. In their statement of today, the camp residents again demand a complete halt to plans to close down their camp.
