University students in western Kordofan held a protest against the deterioration of services at El Fula University on Thursday, without interference from riot police. An opposition member was detained in a city district of Khartoum on Wednesday.

A number of students organised the peaceful demonstration at the campus of El Fula University on Wednesday and Thursday. They demanded the university administration to provide clean drinking water and electricity to the university and the student housing complex.

A police force in five vehicles was stationed outside the campus but did not interfere during the two days or demonstration, a student reported to Radio Dabanga.

Opposition member detained

The Sudanese security service arrested Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) member Radwan Daoud from El Jireif East in Khartoum, against the backdrop of recent protests in the neighbourhood against the re-planning of the area.

The opposition party released a statement yesterday about the arrest. “Security agents, wearing civilian clothes, took Daoud to an unknown destination. They have not informed his family about the reasons for his arrest or where he is being detained.”

The state government has sold the plots to investors, including the brick factories that are considered historical, to be replaced by a new residential area. A number of protesters were arrested or injured during recent protests against the demolition of the factories.
