Call for review of Sudan’s local governments

Sudan’s Federal Government Minister has called for a performance review of the local governments in the country.
Federal Government Minister Feisal Hasan Ibrahim reported a “low performance of the local government” last week, and called for a nationwide review.
He said that there are 159 Ministers appointed in the 18 Sudanese states, 62 state government commissioners, 189 locality commissioners, and 923 state parliament members.
The current federal system in Sudan is stipulated in the 2005 Interim Constitution that was adopted after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between Khartoum and the southern rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in January that year. Southern Sudan obtained a far-reaching autonomy.
Several workshops have been held since 2005, in which state government officials and local leaders called for a more transparent financial allocation system and improved communication with the federal authorities.
