On Tuesday morning, agents of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) detained a prominent member of the Sudanese Socialist Baath Party in El Geneina, capital of West Darfur.

Diaeldin Bilal, the spokesman for the party told Radio Dabanga that Alaeldin Abakar, member of the party’s Political Committee, was detained after statements he had made to the press about the protest that swept the town earlier this week.

He was released on Wednesday evening, the spokesman said. He added that Abakar “was threatened with physical elimination” and condemned “this irresponsible behaviour”.

On Monday, hundreds of basic and secondary school students took to the streets of El Geneina to protest against the shortage of bread, caused by a lack of cooking gas.

The protesters called for freedom and the downfall of the Sudanese government. Security troops and policemen used live ammunition, tear gas, and batons to disperse the crowd. Six students were wounded, three of them seriously.
