Arrests, injuries and torture reported at Gezira University

The National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) have continued arresting students from Darfur enrolled at the Gezira University on Tuesday, 11 December, local sources told Radio Dabanga. Saber Haroun, secretary general of the Student Association of ‘Greater Darfur’ at Gezira University, stated that 30 Darfuri students have been arrested so far.In addition, seven students were severely injured during the unrests and another one was found in critical condition after being reportedly tortured, he revealed. Among the arrested students, Haroun cited the following names: Issa Barima Abdullah, Naji Awadallah, Suleiman Hamed Suleiman, Awadallah Abdullah, Issa al-Nour Ramadan, Suleiman al-Nour Adam, Sharif Abdel Aziz, Adam Adam Abdullah, al-Nour Issa al-Nour and al-Daif al-Zein Abdullah. Speaking to Radio Dabanga from Wad Madani, in El-Jazeera, Haroun stressed the arrests of Darfuri students are still ongoing. Haroun claimed that seven critically injured students are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Wad Madani.The patients are: Mannara Izzeldin, Safa Mohamed Issa, Sit al-Banaat Abdullah, Mawada Mohamedain, Adam Osman, Ibrahim Issa and Mohamed Mahmoud. Torture The secretary general also told Radio Dabanga that Yousef Ateem Adam Abdel Rahman, from El-Fasher and enrolled at the Holy Quran College from El-Fasher, was found on Tuesday morning around 9am. Rahman was ‘thrown’ in front of the dormitories, where he was found, with his head and eyebrows shaved, his nails ripped off and his legs skinned, Haroun recounted.He added the student was in critical condition, had difficulties breathing and his body showed clear signs of torture. Four students still missing On the other hand, Haroun said that four Darfuri students enrolled at the Gezira University are still missing. According to him, the students are: Suleiman Adam Ali, Adam Osman Ibrahim, Ali Abdel Manan and Faisal Saleh. The secretary general stressed that the security forces cordoned off four unmarked fresh graves near the Gezira University compound, adding they are preventing citizens and students from approaching the graves. Arrests in Omdurman On Monday, security forces arrested another five students from Darfur: Nour Mokhtar, head of the Darfur Student Union at Sudan University, Mohamed Idriss Jeddo, former head of the Darfur Student Union of the University of Khartoum, Taher Abdullah head of Darfur Student Union at the Islamic University, Mohamed Haroun, head of the Darfur Student Union at Al Zaeim Al Azhari University and Abd al Razeq from Al Zaeim Al Azhari University, from the area of Shigla in Omdurman, sources informed Radio Dabanga. A source told Radio Dabanga that a total of seven students from Darfur, including himself, were waiting for public transport when they were assaulted by security officers. He recounted the officers threw them into the back of their Toyota Box vehicles, fired in the air and beat the students with sticks and batons. The student added that he and another victim managed to escape despite their injuries and claimed that the others were taken to an unknown location.
