Armed raid on South Darfur’s Khor Abeche

In Khor Abeche, South Darfur, shops closed their doors and residents fled to the surrounding valleys and forests or to the nearby Unamid compound, when the town was attacked by an unidentified armed group today. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a resident of Khor Abeche related that at about 5pm today (Thursday) a group of unidentified gunmen in Land Cruisers attacked the north-western part of the town, using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and machine guns. “The reason for the attack is completely unclear.” A number of citizens were injured and more than 100 houses including all their contents burned to ashes. “Hundreds of families are now staying in the open, without shelter, water and food, because their houses were burnt.” The resident said that no one could explain the reason for the attack. He appealed to the authorities and humanitarian organisations “to help those affected as soon as possible”. File photo: Street in Kabkabiya, North Darfur
