Almost no teachers in East Darfur’s Bahr El Arab

Residents of Bahr El Arab locality in East Darfur complain about a severe shortage of teachers in the area.
The locality commissioner, Ahmed Abukalam, acknowledged the problem to reporters in Ed Daein on Thursday.
He said most schools are making use of unemployed university graduates working as volunteers.
The authorities in Bahr El Arab arrested five secondary school students in Abu Matariq on Monday. They were staging a demonstration, together with dozens of others, in protest against the shortage of teachers, the high tuition fees, and the lack of textbooks.
The commissioner as well reported rising school dropout rates, not only because of the lack of teachers and materials, but also because the children are too hungry to attend lessons.
