Militant Abbala tribesmen have demanded payment for the protection of farmlands south of Kabkabiya.

A farmer told Radio Dabanga from Numu village that one of the omdas in the area began to collect grain from the villages of Numu, Halaga, Kandag, and Dimri last Monday.

“Each village is supposed to pay 60 (100kg) sacks of sorghum to the Abbala militia commander in the area, in exchange for the protection of our crops until the harvest,” he reported, calling the move “unfair and unjust”.

He called on the North Darfur authorities to intervene, and “chase the militia from the area”.
