‘34 SLM rebels released in Darfur’: Governor

The Governor of Central Darfur, Jaafar Abdelhakam, announced in Zalingei that on Thursday, the military authorities released 34 prisoners belonging to the Sudan Liberation Movement the General Command, led by of Abu Jamal Khalil Bakr from detention in North and Central Darfur.

The Governor of Central Darfur, Jaafar Abdelhakam, announced in Zalingei that on Thursday, the military authorities released 34 prisoners belonging to the Sudan Liberation Movement the General Command, led by of Abu Jamal Khalil Baker from detention in North and Central Darfur.

Governor Abdelhakam explained that the release of the Movement’s members is in accordance with the articles of the Korona Agreement, signed with the SLM faction in the Central darfur capital in November.

In his statement, the Governor promised to release other groups who are still in detention in South and North Darfur, as well as amnesty for others who have been tried and will be released in the near future.

He also stated that more than 1,000 members of the Movement have been taken up in the Security Arrangements*, promising to implement all the terms of the agreement according to agreed schedules.

*The Security Arrangements, stipulated under the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), allow for the former rebels to be integrated into the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), police, and security forces.
