13-year old raped amid ‘worsening security situation’ in W. Darfur camp

A displaced girl aged 13 was raped by militias armed by the government near camp Riyadh, West Darfur, on Wednesday amid a “worsening security situation in the area”, sources report. Witnesses speaking to Radio Dabanga said two young girls were collecting firewood two kilometers north of the camp when insurgents captured them, noting one of them managed to escape. The abused victim was taken to a hospital in El-Geneina for treatment and sources confirmed the police was informed about the incident. Displaced persons say the security situation is deteriorating in the area and disclosed that some 300 families arrived this week at camp Riyadh. The families, they continued, come from villages north of El-Geneina, West Darfur’s capital, and were suffering abuses by pro-government militias. In addition, the population of five villages in the locality of El-Geneina has recently arrived at camps Riyadh and Dorti following attacks by Abbala militants in Kendebe, Sirba locality, situated in the vicinity. The firsha (local administrator) of these villages, Mohamed Ibrahim, told Radio Dabanga that about 4.500 people left their homes, adding Abbala members assaulted the residents and looted their livestock.
