120 Darfur students leave Sennar university

120 students announced on Wednesday to stop their study completely at the University of Sennar’s College of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies on Wednesday. They will not return until the university administration responds to their demands relating to the exemption from tuition fees. A spokesperson of the Darfur Students Association at the University of Sennar explained that they had begun a sit-in. They had given the university 72 hours to respond to their demands: to exempt the Darfur students from tuition fees. Darfuri students, being displaced, are exempted from registration and tuition fees according to the Abuja and Doha peace agreements. “But all attempts to resolve our case failed,” the spokesperson said. “And therefore we have left the university. We will only return if our case has been resolved.” He explained that the rest of the Darfur students at other colleges also will leave the Sennar university for this reason. Wednesday was marked by violent clashes between Darfur students and National Congress Party students. The latter attacked the Darfur students while they were protesting against the administration at the university in Khartoum and the university in El Obeid. The protests were also aimed at the decision to dismiss Darfur students as they did not pay tuition fees. A number of students from both sides were wounded by the attacks.
