Mass protest in West Darfur against election, departure of Unamid

Thousands of inhabitants of Murnei camp for the displaced in West Darfur took to the streets today in protest against the upcoming election, and the Sudanese government’s demand of the departure of Unamid.
“Camp leaders, elders, and sheikhs, imams of the mosques, and members of youth, women, and student associations, addressed the about 7,000 demonstrators, who assembled at Freedom Square, south of the camp,” the coordinator of Murnei camp told Radio Dabanga.

“Camp leaders, elders, and sheikhs, imams of the mosques, and members of youth, women, and student associations, addressed the about 7,000 demonstrators, who assembled at Freedom Square, south of the camp,” the coordinator of Murnei camp told Radio Dabanga.

“They demanded a continued, strengthened presence of Unamid in Darfur, calling for an increase of its forces.” He said that the demonstrators also denounced the forthcoming election. “They consider the April election a falsification of the will of the Sudanese”.

The demonstrators carried banners, calling for “freedom, dignity, and democracy”, demanded “a just and comprehensive peace”, and the prosecution of the perpetrators of crimes in Darfur.
