The chairman of the Darfur Regional Authority, Dr Tijani Sese, the head of the governmental Darfur Peace Office, Dr Amin Hassan Omar, and the governor of East Darfur, Anas Omar, were present at the opening ceremony.

The completed projects include a model village, established with financial support from Qatar, and a number of schools and health centres in the locality. The foundation stone for the East Darfur parliament building was also laid.

In his address to the new inhabitants of the Um Daw model village, near the East Darfur capital of Ed Daein, Sese called on the people of Darfur to “unite and fight the insecurity, tribal conflicts and other negative phenomena”. He stressed the need to “extend the rule of law to all the five states of Darfur, to realise security, stability, and peace for all”.
