Young women ‘brutally raped by militia’ in West Darfur

Two young women were ‘brutally raped’ by pro-government militiamen on Wednesday, as they made their way from Saraf Jidad in Sirba locality to the market in Tendelti in El Geneina locality, West Darfur. An activist told Radio Dabanga that the rape of the women, who are 16 and 18 respectively, was committed by militiamen operating out of camp Saraf Jidad. The activist said “the militiamen constantly rob shoppers, especially in the market of Tendelti, without the government authorities paying any attention to stop these crimes”. “The people of the camp have not informed the police about the rapes or the chain of incidents in the area, because of the indifference of the police and Unamid, which are no longer concerned with the displaced and their complaints.” The activist appealed to human rights organisations, the local authorities of El Geneina, and to state authorities to intervene. “They need to resolve the security situation, which is made worse by the actions of the militias. They need to protect the displaced who visit weekly markets.” File photo Related: Two women raped, men beaten near Dreige camp, South Darfur (29 May 2013) Militants rape 3 displaced women in East Jebel Marra (5 May 2013)
