Villagers detained in Sudan’s South Kordofan

On Wednesday, army troops and policemen detained ten people from Lagori village in the Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan. A group of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) troops, together with policemen, in more than 60 Land Cruisers) surrounded the village of Lagori, about 27km northeast of South Kordofan’s capital Kadugli, the Nuba Mountains-based Human Rights and Development Organization (HUDO) reported in an appeal released on Sunday. After surrounding the village for many hours, the joint forces raided the village, searched it, and seized ten 10 villagers. They deported the detainees to an unknown destination. HUDO states in the appeal that it obtained reliable information that the detainees were taken into military custody, and tortured. The names of seven of the detainees are Mustafa Bashir (55), the mayor of Lagori; Zakaria Matar (50), farmer; Halima Hassan El Iyasir (43), farmer and housewife; Kaka Hussein Tutu (43) farmer and housewife; Mohamed Mousa Makki (42); trader, Amna Madebu Kortekeila (29), housewife, and Abdallah Khamis (24), farmer. HUDO in its appeal refers to the fact that the raid may be linked with the “government forces’ defeat in the battle of Daldako” during the last week of May”. The area of Daldako, located 7km north of Kadugli, is a stronghold of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). “On daily basis the rights of civilians in Nuba Mountain are violated” HUDO states. “They are accused of associating with the SPLM-N. Since the government started its dry season offensive, many civilians were detained in El Abassiya, Rashad, and Abu Jubaiha counties, the area of Dalami, and now the area of Kadugli. At the same time, the areas which the government troops cannot reach effectively are targeted by air raids.” HUDO appeals “to all actors to put more pressure on the Sudanese government in order to stop the violence, and the targeting of civilians” in South Kordofan.
