Unamid officers killed, four abducted in North Darfur

(UPDATED 23:30) Three Unamid peacekeepers were reportedly killed, and four others abducted in Korma locality, North Darfur, this morning. Multiple witnesses reported to Radio Dabanga that four gunmen in a vehicle attacked seven peacekeepers who had parked their vehicle near the Shoba Basic School in the vicinity of the Korma Unamid base, about 50 km west of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur. “They fired at the peacekeepers, killing two of them instantly,” a teacher of Shoba Basic School told Radio Dabanga. “A third officer was injured, and died later.” The gunmen then seized the Unamid vehicle and the four other peacekeepers at gunpoint, and left towards an unknown destination. The spokesman for the UN Security Council announced that two Unamid officers were killed. Un Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today told reporters in New York about the murder of two Unamid troops. “This has been a bloody October for UN Peacekeeping,” Ban Ki-moon said. “In Darfur, Mali and the Central African Republic, we have lost 14 peacekeepers in hostile acts – nearly one per day.” File photo: Members of the Unamid Senegalese contingent posted in Um Baro, North Darfur, on patrol to Basma village, located 22 km north of Um Baro, November 2011 (Albert González Farran/Unamid) Related: Unamid welcomes conviction of peacekeepers’ attackers in North Darfur (23 September 2014)
