Bashir Tawer of the NUP White Nile branch, and member of the party’s Central Bureau, was detained by security officers at Khartoum Airport in November last year, upon his return from South Sudan, where he had attended a conference on peaceful coexistence of tribes in the border areas.

Dr Maryam El Mahdi told Radio Dabanga on Sunday that his detention “reveals the true mentality of the regime, which considers every peace activist an enemy”.

She demanded the immediate release of El Seleimi, as Tawer is popularly called. “He has not been charged or brought to trial. His family does not know where he is being held until now.”
