Thousands face starvation in Otash camp, South Darfur

Thousands of the displaced inhabitants of Otash camp in Nyala, face a bleak humanitarian and health situation as no food rations have been received. Those affected include the newly displaced, as well as established residents who have not been registered. The head Sheikh of the camp told Radio Dabanga that 25,000 names of the original displaced ‘disappeared’ from the registration list after a ‘correction’ in 2011. “There is still no solution to the problem, in spite of several meetings between the camp leaders and the UN World Food Programme. “They promised to solve the problem by March, as well as complete the registration of 2,500 newly displaced in 2014.” The sheikh stressed that the displaced face hard conditions, and diseases are already braking out among them. He appealed to humanitarian agencies and the WFP to expedite provision of food rations. File photo: WFP food distribution (Albert González Farran / Unamid)
