Sudanese Professors in Khartoum angered by killing of demonstrators

The Association of the University of Khartoum Professors has condemned the excessive force by security forces against peaceful demonstrators in Khartoum and other cities. A statement issued by the Association confirms that it strongly condemns the excessive and impetuous violence by the government and its security forces used to quell legitimate and peaceful protests, which led to the death of hundreds of students, young people, and even children. Dr Mohamed Yusif, member of the Association told Radio Dabanga from Khartoum, that the Association in its statement appealed for the release of all detainees arrested for political reasons, the treatment of the injured and compensation for all people killed or robbed by security forces in their irresponsible reaction to peaceful protests. He stressed that the statement also confirms its strong condemnation of racist propaganda fabricated by the leaders and supporters of the “Salvation regime”. The Association demanded an immediate ban on all kinds of racial discrimination. Yusif added that the Association considers a “prompt and complete halt of these violating government policies” the first step in order to stop the bloodshed and realise stability. The government should introduce alternatives proposed by economic experts and specialists and implement comprehensive political and economic reforms. This will create the right climate to stop the wars and conduct national reconciliation, and pave the way for a peaceful transition from a one-party tyranny to a pluralistic democratic system. Yusif stressed that the Association in its the statement demands constitutional freedoms, including guarantees for freedom of expression and publication, affirming the right of the press and media to receive, monitor and disseminate information and opinions without restrictions. He added that the statement demands “all political forces, civil society organisations and armed movements to think seriously and as soon as possible about a joint action to put an end to the tribulations of our people caused by the corrupt regime”.
