Colonel Al Soami Khaled Saad, the official spokesperson of the Sudanese armed forces, said on Thursday that troops had taken control across the Libyan border in the wake of the recent turmoil in Tripoli. Libyan rebel forces stormed into Tripoli on Tuesday and declared victory leading to the fall of the 42-year-old Gaddafi regime in the country.

Colonel Al Soami said that the Sudanese forces deployed along the Libyan border were conducting a routine patrol and monitoring the situation during this time of crisis in Tripoli.

There is, however, speculation that the border control has been tightened after rumors started surfacing regarding the possible handover of Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) chief Dr Khalil Ibrahim to Sudan.

Dr Khalil Ibrahim has been held under house arrest by the Gaddafi regime in Libya.
