On Monday evening, the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) released Omar El Degeir, the president of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) after he was detained on 28 December. About 40 party leaders and members are still in detention.

The political bureau of the SCP said in a statement following El Degeir’s release: “After more than two months of arbitrary detention that violates [Sudanese] laws, the Constitution and human rights, the security apparatus released El Degeir”.

The statement denied what was widely raised on Monday evening about President Omar Al Bashir’s intention to visit El Degeir at his home.

The party said in a statement, “We have no knowledge of the visit of the head of the regime on Tuesday or any other day. … We affirm that our position on this regime is unshakable and no meeting or dialogue will not bring us [to speak] with him.”
