‘Sudan presidential aide’s speech shows frustration’: SLM leader

The deputy president of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) and the head of the Sudan Liberation Movement SLM, Minni Arko Minawi, has described a speech by presidential aide Nafie Ali Nafie on Thursday as “the words of a frustrated person who cannot resist the SRF”. Minawi was speaking to Radio Dabanga in reaction to an address by Nafie to the Legislative Council of Khartoum State. Nafie, who is a leading advisor to Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir, outlined the Sudanese government’s stance on “Plan B” for the SRF advance on Khartoum, as well as the government’s beliefs with regard to the rebels’ strength and position. “The forces of the SRF are active in the whole of Sudan,” Minawi said. “Everybody knows that very well, but Nafie speaks with a kind of frustration, implying that his forces have no ability to defend the cities targeted by SRF forces.” Minawi is defiant: “It is not Nafie who will determine where we will be. He certainly knows that our forces are present in Darfur, because it is common knowledge that they clashed with the so-called Sudan Armed Forces near Nyala a week ago.” File photos: Nafie Ali Nafie (left) and Minni Arko Minawi Related: ‘Rebels plan to advance on Khartoum from two sides’: Sudan government (13 June 2013)
