Street vendors in Nyala, capital of South Darfur, have been fined for illegally selling their products at the Grand Market.

“A large number of policemen raided the market early on Monday morning,” a street vendor reported to Radio Dabanga. “After confiscating our belongings, each of us had to pay a fine of SDG50 ($8.25).”

He said that the majority of the street vendors are single mothers, widows, displaced, and students. “The value of the products we sell does not exceed SDG100.”

The vendor called upon the South Darfur authorities “not to cut off the livelihoods of vulnerable people, who are unable to find a steady job in the country”.
