SPLA and Rizeigat begin talks after South Darfur border clashes

The situation remains tense in the Bahr El Arab region, on the southern end of Darfur, after scores were killed in fighting there earlier this week. A delegation of Rizeigat tribal leaders went to the area to calm the situation, said Brigadier Talha Madiyu, advisor to the Government of South Darfur. Leaders from SPLM and Rizeigat have begun talking in order to find a permanent solution to the conflict, said Abdelrahman Musa Bishali, who is both Rizeigat and a member of the SPLM Liberation Council.

Leaders from SPLM and Rizeigat have begun talking in order to find a permanent solution to the conflict, said Abdelrahman Musa Bishali, who is both Rizeigat and a member of the SPLM Liberation Council.

On Sunday news agencies reported that 58 Rizeigat were killed and 85 injured in clashes on Friday. However, Bishali could only confirm to Radio Dabanga that 14 slain Rizeigat were identified and 15 injured. From the SPLA side, 90 were killed and tens were injured, he said. Besides that, tens of thousands of cattle are missing from the Rizeigat and some animals from the SPLA side.

He appealed to Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, to intervene in order to prevent any renewal of the conflict. He appealed also to Rizeigat not to start the fight again. Further, he pleaded for the Joint Integrated Unit in Bahr El Ghazal to arrive as soon as possible. This is a unit formed by soldiers of the armies of both North and South Sudan.
