A special court in Kadugli headed by judge Hisham Ahmed Al-Tom sentenced Hammad Tutu, political and military commander in the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), to death by hanging on Friday. The sentence came after deliberations in the court lasted only for two sessions. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Hammad Tutu’s defense lawyer was threatened not to participate in the case or talk to his client.

Gabriel Adam Bilal, spokesperson of the JEM, condemned the decision calling it unjust and racist. He told Radio Dabanga, “Hammad is a prisoner of war. I appeal to governments, human rights organizations, humanitarian and other peace-loving people with responsibility to intervene urgently to save the leader from the gallows.”

‘Ibrahim safe in Libya’

On the other hand, Gabriel said that Dr Khalil Ibrahim, head of the JEM is safe in Libya. “He and his entourage are fine and in good health,” Gabriel told Radio Dabanga.

Gabriel added that the movement had an intensive communicated international community to ensure the safety of Dr Khalil and his delegation.

There has been speculation about Dr Khalil planning to cross over the border from Libya to Sudan.
