South Darfur camp elders call on Unamid to fulfill its duty

The elders of El Salam camp, Bileil locality in South Darfur have handed a memorandum to Unamid and the Sudanese Humanitarian Affairs Commission (HAC) concerning the deadly clashes between Sudanese army forces and militiamen inside the camp market on Friday afternoon. El Salam camp sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya told Radio Dabanga that the camp elders in the memorandum demanded from Unamid to fully fulfil its duty of protecting the displaced people, as well as to arrest of the offenders. The memorandum called on the UN and the international community not to keep silent and condemn the assaults and abuses carried out by the government-backed militiamen against the people living in the camp. Tabaldiya reported that two camp residents were killed during the clashes, Abdelmajid Mohamed Fadul, teacher at a secondary school, and Yusif Abdallah, and that Aisha Bishara and Abdu Abdelshafi were wounded. He recounted that since May 2013, El Salam camp witnessed 17 militia attacks, in which more than seven people were killed and injured. Two girls were raped. The camp was plundered 11 times. He said that Unamid promised that they would hand the memorandum to the authorities concerned and arrange a meeting with the locality commissioner and HAC. The camp market is still closed.
