In Kalma Camp for displaced persons in South Darfur, one child was killed and a second child injured by severe rain storms, on Saturday night. The rains also caused the demolition of 500 houses, and major damage.

A displaced woman from Kalma Camp, who lost her house through the storm, told Radio Dabanga that the displaced people in the camp have appealed to humanitarian organizations for the provission of urgent aid, especially food and tarpaulins. They also need help with drainage, helping them to discharge the excess of rain water.

Health situation in West Darfur camps deteriorate

In Nazho camp, Zalingei, West Darfur, people suffer from a deteriorating sanitary situation in the camps. Excessive rains have led to large puddles, causing the spread of mosquitoes and diarrhea among children, especially in camp Hassa Hissa.

A student coordinator of the camps told Zalingei Radio Dabanga that humanitarian organizations and UN agencies must speed up the provision of tarpaulins. They must also teach people how to properly drain ponds, to get rid of mosquitoes.

A coordinator of the Hamidiya camp in Zalingei told Radio Dabanga, that the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed its willingness to distributed 300 tarpaulins to poor families. It was announced, that, today, a meeting would be held with UNHCR to discuss the situation.
