An initiative for the rehabilitation of homeless children was launched in the capital of South Darfur on Sunday. In North Darfur's Zamzam camp, the closure of preschool centres has severely disadvantaged displaced children.

The rehabilitation project should provide homeless children with shelter, food, medicine, clothing, and education. The initiator of the campaign, Abdallah Mousa, launched the campaign at a press conference in Nyala.

He made an appeal to national and foreign organisations, and people in Darfur themselves to contribute to the rehabilitation project.

The secretary-general of the state council of Children Welfare, Najad El Ghamjan, held a survey in South Darfur and found that there are approximately 4,762 children homeless in the state.

No preschool in Zamzam

In North Darfur's largest camp for displaced people, the months-long stop of preschool centres has disadvantaged children, a camp leader complained.

In total, 48 preschool centres have halted their activities in Zamzam camp, south of El Fasher, since the beginning of this year. A leader in Zamzam told Radio Dabanga that three aid organisations had been running the centres, but were forced to stop because of a lack of funds in January.

The psychological and educational support, as well as some protection services, have come to a halt for the about 12,530 children that used to go to the centres.

The camp leader called upon local organisations that work in the field of childhood to help reopening these centres, “so that the children will not be helpless”.
