Registration of newly displaced villagers from East Jebel Marra and Tawila locality at the North Darfur camps for the displaced has begun. Unicef, in cooperation with the Sudanese Child Welfare Council, has distributed blankets to the newcomers in Zamzam camp. The North Darfur authorities have adjusted the teaching hours because of the current cold wave.

About 200 newly displaced from East Jebel Marra were registered at the Shangil Tobaya camp in Tawila locality.

A sheikh of Shangil Tobaya camp reported to Dabanga that dozens of people who fled the attacks by government militias on their villages reached the camp until now. “Their names were registered, and submitted to Unamid and the governmental Dar El Salaam for Development organisation.”

Others fled towards Kabkabiya. According to a tribe elder, six large families arrived from Fanga and Talha to the Sibak El Khel and Hai El Salam camps. He said that they handed their names to Unamid and the Small Farmers’ Association for assistance.

In Zamzam camp for the displaced, located near El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, Unicef, in cooperation with the Sudanese Child Welfare Council has distributed 1,400 blankets to 700 newly displaced families, a camp activist told Dabanga from the camp.

He praised Unicef for their action, saying that the UN children’s fund requested them to provide them with the details of the children who recently arrived to the camp. “We listed 770 children, and 140 nursing mothers and pregnant women.”

The camp resident called on Unicef to provide aid to the more than 1,000 newly displaced who did not enter the camp, “though we have not concluded our count yet”.

He added that they expect the arrival of another 3,000 fleeing families from East Jebel Marra and Tawila locality in the coming days, “as the road to the camp can be considered as safe these days”.

Cold wave

The North Darfur state Ministry of Education has decided to delay the start of the school day to 9 am nine because of the cold wave that is currently hitting the country.

The lessons are shortened to half an hour per subject. The Kindergartens are closed “until further notice”.
