Prices of basic commodities soar in Sudan

People in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, complain about the soaring prices of basic commodities. The price of sugar in Sudan rose by more than 16 percent.
“We now pay SDG120 ($20) for a cylinder of cooking gas, while its price did not exceed SDG60 ($10) on the black market last year,” a source told Radio Dabanga from El Fasher.
“The price of a 100 kg sack of charcoal is now SDG175 ($29). A kilogram of meat has risen from SDG60 to SDG140 ($23).

“The local transport fares have risen too, because of the soaring fuel prices,” he added.

The price of sugar in Sudan has risen by more than 16 percent.

Economic analyst Abdelhadi Ibrahim attributed the price rise to the increase of the customs value of the US Dollar against the Sudanese Pound.

He told Radio Dabanga on Wednesday that the prices of other basic commodities will rise again for the same reason. “The 2016 budget, approved in December, will not hold for more than a week.”
