More Ronga Tas displaced detained in Central Darfur

Sudanese security forces detained three injured Ronga Tas camp residents in Central Darfur’s Zalingei on Sunday. “Three members of the security and some policemen came to the hospital of Zalingei on Sunday, and detained Kaltoum Eisa Idris, Hawa Ismail Ibrahim, and Mohamed Juma Mohamed”, the coordinator of the Central Darfur camps for the displaced reported to Radio Dabanga. Later that day they also took injured Fatima Abakar Ahmed to the security offices.” The camp coordinator accused the security of forcing the medical doctors to sign a permission of leave for the injured Ronga Tas camp residents last Thursday. “They took them to the security premises on Thursday, and returned them to the hospital on Saturday for further treatment of their wounds.” The coordinator holds the Central Darfur State government, the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission, and the security services responsible for the attack on the Ronga Tas camp on 28 May, and the detention of the wounded displaced at the security apparatus’ premises in Zalingei. Last Wednesday, Ronga Tas camp was attacked by a group of armed men, allegedly members of the former rebel Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM). The LJM, that signed the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) with the Sudanese government in 2011, is led by Tijani Sese, who is also the chairman of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA). Both LJM and DRA have strongly denied any involvement in the attack. The displaced said that the attack came in the wake of a workshop discussing the construction of model villages. Ronga Tas camp residents have fiercely protested the plan to turn the camp into a model village since December last year. In January a number of camp sheikhs were detained for this reason. The displaced argue that they prefer to return to their original villages, yet only when peace and security are realised and new settlers have been removed. The DRA is co-responsible for the implementation of a number of model villages to be built in the five states Darfur, as agreed on in the DDPD.
