JEM and Sudan government fight in west, north Darfur

The Justice and Equality Movement and government forces fought yesterday in the latest in a week-long series of clashes and aerial attacks. The rebel group announced that it repelled two attacks launched by the government on two locations in North and West Darfur. JEM’s Abu Bakr Hamid Al-Nur said that the movement’s forces repelled an attack in the Dereisa area southeast of Habila in West Darfur yesterday, capturing weapons and vehicles and forcing the government forces to flee. JEM announced that it lost five men and six were wounded. The rebel official claimed also that the government attempted to seize JEM positions west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. Abu Bakr told Radio Dabanga that the rebels defeated the government troops in those areas and captured weapons and ammunition.JEM Secretary of Administration and Management Abubakr Hamid Nour had told Radio Dabanga on Wednesday that the government used Antonov and MiG warplanes to bomb areas in north and west Darfur. In North Darfur State the bombing covered areas east of Jebel Marra and south and east of El Fasher, including Tabet, Tarni, and Korma. The bombing in West Darfur State occurred in Abu Gomra to the west of Saraf Umra, Gergi Gergi, Bir Mina, Gargeera, Bir Sabeeba and the Jebel Moon area. The official said that the bombing killed or wounded some civilians.Yesterday evening (Thursday) a spokesman of the Sudanese Armed Forces dismissed rumours that JEM was mobilizing around towns in North Darfur and intending to attack El Fasher. The army stated it “will respond forcibly and seriously” to aggressions of JEM. It reiterated that JEM had not besieged any towns in Darfur.
